1. How did you get in to the sport?

JW: I was graduating high school and had been up to no good for a couple years. Drugs, alcohol, fat girls the usual. Decided I wanted to turn it around and found BJJ. I've never looked back.

2. What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
JW: Guillotine choke without a doubt. I've finished a lot of fights with different variations of that move.

3. Who is your biggest inspiration?
JW: Helio Gracie. No rules, no weight classes, no time limits. Whoever whenever. Total badass!

4. Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
JW: I own Combative Sports Center in Manhattan Kansas. I do most of my training there. David "Caveman" Rickels is our kick boxing coach and I teach BJJ.

5. What is your favorite aspect of MMA? (grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.)
JW: My favorite aspect of MMA is putting it on the line. Not a certain position or style but just puttin my nuts out there. Always going for the finish and not playing it safe.

6. What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
JW: Everything. Fighting is my focus in life at this point. Without it I would've ended up a piece of shit. Or a stripper. Probably a piece of shit stripper.

7. What separates you from every other fighter
JW: My entertainment value. I perform before, during and after the fight. I kill interviews, finish fights and make sure everyone knows it!

8. If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
JW: My dream fight is anyone in the UFC. I've spent several years trying to get there and I feel that I'm close. I have turned down some offers that would shock people to try to achieve my goal.

9. What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
JW: A UFC veteran and one of the greatest in the history of mid west MMA.

10. Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
JW: My black belt in BJJ and being a coach to some very succesful fighters. I always feel it's more rewarding to win as a coach than a fighter.

11. Your nickname is "The Nose" how did you get your nickname?
JW: Apparently you've never seen me. Lol. Cause I have a huge nose. My friends always made fun of me growing up and called me nose. It stuck. I like it because it's not a tough guy nickname.

12. How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
JW: Training full time in the gi and drinking malt liqour. Love 40s. Colt 45, Old E and especially Mickeys. Other than that just hanging with friends and family.

13. Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of mma?
JW: Not really, but you have to understand this was back in the day. I didn't enter MMA, I entered NHB. I'm old school. Now that people are more educated on the sport, I get tons of support.

14. Whats your gameplan for 2013?
JW: Go to the UFC, earn a submission of the night bonus and buy a lake house. An action figure, trading card and videogame charecter are my main goals other than that.

15. If you could fight anyone outside of the MMA world who would it be?
JW: Anyone in the WWE. I've always secretly aspired to be a pro wrestler. Or Floyd Mayweather in a street fight.

16. What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
JW: Honestly, I don't have many. I teach, train fighters and prepare for fights. I love Nintendo 64 and music though.

17. Whats the most embarassing song on your iPod?
JW: Love Kesha and Kenny G and I won't apologize for either!!!

18. Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
JW: I dig all sports really. I'm a big fan of football and basketball for sure. Not easy being a Chiefs fan this year, but K state has had a hell of a season.

19. Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, whats going through your head in that moment?
JW: My entrance, finishing in the first round and how much fun the after party will be.
JW: Jiu-Jitsu or DIE!!!! Boomsauce!!!

What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
Flying Knee & the submission depends on the set up.

No one, I don't really look up to anyone. I have a lot of respect for GSP's work ethic, Josh Barnetts heart in the Cormier fight, the Diaz brothers attitudes but can't really call someone my biggest inspiration.

Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
I don't intend on fighting this year. Just working with the Westside and GFTeam this year

What is your favorite aspect of MMA?
(grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.) I love all aspects, I go from wrestling to boxing for MMA. I go between them.

What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
IDK, just means I sacrifice a lot for very little in return, lol. It's a tough sport and even tougher to make a living at. Just enjoy the hell out of winning and overcoming obstacles.

What separates you from every other fighter?
I think it would be pretentious to say anything here. I'm just a guy who has done different martial arts and likes to fight.
If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
Man, that's tough. Probably the #2 guy at 145 in the world whoever that is, just not Aldo because I got nothing for him lol. Frankie Edger if I had to to pick
What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
I don't think I will be remembered. Maybe if I come back in 2014 and the stars aline I can make a run. We'll see what the future holds.
Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
Getting a victory in the UFC & Bellator
Your nickname is "The Crazy Cuban" how did you get your nickname?
A friend dared me to use it as an ammy, I did and it stuck.

Train my killer team and make money.
If you could fight anyone outside of the MMA world who would it be?
Hitler or anyone that has harmed kids.
What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
Hunting and traveling.
Whats the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
I don't have an iPod but I like plenty of trendy mainstream music lol

No, just wrestling and boxing!
Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, whats going through your head in that moment?
Hurry up!!!
How much does the mental aspect play a part in mixed martial arts?
After you have done your work and conditioning it's 90% if you are evenly matched
I appreciate the interview, I'm just like a lot of old schoolers, was doing this before it was cool. I was lucky to get to do TUF and the UFC and there are a lot of guys that didn't. I'm appreciative of what the sport has done for me.

Alfred Leisure

1. How did you get in to the sport?
I got into MMA after my brother came to me one day and asked me if I would help him get ready for a cage fight I told him he was crazy but you gotta back your brothers play so I did he tko his guy with in 40 secs I was such a rush and I wasn't even the one fighting he went 3-0 pretty quick and thats when I started getting into it.

6. What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
I love MMA I love the fact that a guy can be twice Ur size but u can still come out on top and a guy me be a better striker but u can be the better wrestler and take away his striking or the other way around now a days u have to be good at all aspects.

7. What separates you from every other fighter?
I would say one thing is that I've been put in alot of tough position and I know how to stay calm alot of guys fight angry u have to stay focused and stay calm it helps Ur conditioning so much compared to a guy who is tense and all wired.

8. If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
Honestly never really fight but to be able to spar with gsp would be sweet just to really know the difference and see where u really are as a fighter and to know what it would be like to train with the best fighter in the world.

9. What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
Just that any time I stepped in against anyone that I put the work in and i will always go in and give it everything I got and win or lose I wanna be known as a respectful mixed martial artist I don't wanna be know as one of this cocky guys that i have seen in this sport that has no idea what MMA is about.

10. Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
I would have to say winning the state title back in June it was my toughest fight so far I lost the first rd pretty bad second round was real close 3 rd I knew I won but I can remember after the first rd i told myself hey know Ur in a fight time to put up or shut I never once thought about quitting but he was really frustrating me with his take downs in the second rd i started to land some shots and started to get comfortable towards the end.Come the 3rd round I ended up on top the one place I really didn't want to be with him cause he had some good jits but that where I basically was able to keep him down and work some ground and pound and stole the third rd a tough fight that I think could of went either way.

11. Any words for your upcoming opponent?
Not really I got nothing but respect for anyone that steps in the cage he seems like respectful fighter and I'm sure he will be on his a game as well, I I look forward to a war with him.

12. How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
When I'm not training I'm either hunting fishing or riding dirt bikes with my little boy and girl

13. Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
Yes they all were some people told me I was to small but they obviously no nothing about it all of My family supports me when it comes to fighting both of my kids have walked out with my at almost all my fights the one deal was win or lose no crying or if dad gets hurt don't worry dad can take it and believe or not at 10 and years old they handle it pretty well and both of them have pretty good skills themselves.

14. Whats your game plan for 2013?
I just wanna take it one fight at time and stay healthy. After my next cage fight I wanna do some pro boxing and kickboxing I did alot of kickboxing as an amateur and loved it.But my biggest goal for 2013 is to keep getting better and move forward.

15. If you could fight anyone outside of the MMA world who would it be?
There is a long list lol but that would take too long and if I cant do it legally and go home afterwards then its not worth the time.

16. What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
Shooting guns hunting fishing and dirt bike riding if I'm not training 9 out of 10 times that's what I'm doing.

17. Whats the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
Its a secret lol.

18. Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
I love any sport with contact I was always a natural at most sports I would have to say the one I like the most growing up was baseball cause my old baseball team in little we won 1st place in our league we were a tough team that worked hard.

19. Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, whats going through your head in that moment?
Man there are so many things that go there my head not wanting to let anyone down what if i get knocked out or lose is this guy stronger than me faster than me but all the things going threw my head once the door closes I try my best just to stay calm and fight smart and put all that behind me and just face my fears u hear people say they don't get scared I think that's crazy I'm always scared but its a good thing I like that feeling and when its all said and done its never as bad as u think its gonna be.

Jessica Zomcik

Interview with Jessica Zomcik who holds a record of 6-3 in amateur mixed martial arts competition.

How did you get in to the sport?
I met someone who was involved in the sport and went to watch one of his training sessions and the coach told me I should take a class. The next night I attended a boxing class and a jiu jitsu class. I was hooked instantly.

What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
Probably armbars, half my victories have come by way of armbar, so those are fun, but I really enjoy my right hand making contact with their face.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
Anyone who has gone through the struggle of making fighting their career.

Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
I’m with Evolve MMA out of Medina, Ohio.
What is your favorite aspect of MMA? (grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.)
Striking for sure, followed closely by grappling.
What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
I feel very privileged to have the opportunities to follow my passion fully. I recently moved to Ohio specifically for the Evolve gym. Not many people can just pick up their life and relocate for a sport, and I’ve had so much support and wonderful guidance from my family, coaches, teammates and friends. It means the world to me to step in the cage and display my skills that everyone has instilled in me. I’m so thankful for everyone’s hard work they do to prepare me for a fight and I feel honored to be apart of the Evolve family.

What separates you from every other fighter
I train like a man does

If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
Rousey. It WILL happen.

What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
Great technique and entertaining performances

Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
Taking the first step to bettering my situation.

How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
I enjoy spending time with my two pits Piranha and Stavi

Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
Yes, VERY, it is one thing that is great about my family-very supportive in whatever I choose to do.

Whats your gameplan for 2013?
Boxing debut in January, kickboxing smoker February, ammy MMA fights, grappling tournaments, I’m going to be very active, the more experience the better.

If you could fight anyone outside of the MMA world who would it be?
That bitch in 3rd grade who didn’t want to share her cookie with me.

What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
Sewing. Not really a hobby, more like a side job, definitely my other passion in life. I like making custom thai shorts and cool stuff like that, not quilts or stupid sally homemaker crafts

Whats the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
All my songs are awesome. Remember that.

Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
I like riding my motorcycle or taking bicycle rides when it’s nice out, a little longboarding. There’s not too much time outside of the gym and my sewing room to mess around with other things, but I’m ok with that because fighting is what I love

Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, whats going through your head in that moment?
Did I pay my electric bill last month? I hope I remembered to water the plants before I left the house…..

How much does the mental aspect play a part in mixed martial arts?
I’d say about 40% mental 30% cardio 30% technique. Mental conditioning is vital in this sport for sure

I’d like to thank my manager John Cook, my striking coaches Ryan “The Lion” Madigan and Steve Traczyk, my Jiu Jitsu coach Mike Riedel, my wrestling coach Dave Rella, Scott Higley, all of my brothers at Evolve that continuously give me the best work possible, and my family and friends for their endless support and love they give me.

Gina Begley

Interview with amateur mixed martial artist, Gina Begley, who will be competing February 2nd in Shepardsville,KY at the Hardrock MMA event against Cassandra Walker.

How did you get in to the sport?
I enrolled myself in kickboxing for fitness and my son in the JKD program. After watching his sessions I picked up grappling. From there the desire to test our skills lead to competition. From there its just naturally progressed into more competition.

What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
I LOVE to practice all of my striking and grappling. Its so much fun to learn new techniques and then try and use them in sparring or rolling and actual fighting.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
Probably my coach Scott Elliott and Jessamyn "The Gun" Duke. They inspire me to have confidence in myself. They encourage me to grow as a fighter and a person.

Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
I train with Team AFS. Our coach is Scott Elliott, owner and head instructor at the AFS Academy. We are located in Richmond, KY.

What is your favorite aspect of MMA? (grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.)
It depends on how the stars, moon, ocean, act.. are aligned with my mood that day. I’m joking but I go through phases where I enjoy training a certain aspect more for a while.

What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
I love the competition and fighting. But I don’t feel so much like a fighter as a martial artist. I really enjoy the growth in that more than being labeled a fighter.

What separates you from every other fighter?
The fact that my kid and I train travel and compete together. As well as win a lot together!

If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
Myself when I first started sparring and thinking I was good at any of it.

What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
The mother of the current male champ (being my son when he is older) that also had an impressive fighting career and raised him up in the sport thus creating the badass that he is once all this goes down.

Your nickname is "Jellybean" how did you get your nickname?
I love Jelly Belly jellybeans. Particularly the buttered popcorn ones. In my first fight camp I struggled with diet and may have been caught inhaling a bag in a corner by my friend and coach Jessamyn Duke.

How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
We are always in the gym even when there are no fights coming up. We enjoy training seminars. I watch a lot of fights, read a lot of mma related news. My son and I like to veg out on video games if we don’t have anything to do. We could spend an entire Saturday after training playing Super Mario or Batman Legos.

Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
My mom thinks I’m like a rock star even if I did absolutely nothing so she would find anything I do fantastic as long as it doesn’t do harm. Growing up they were use to me being involved in scraps and stuff. This all makes sense to them and at least there are rules. They really don’t follow any of it though and I don’t think they clearly understand what it all means. As long as I’m happy healthy and not involved in negative crazy stuff they are good with it. All of my friends are in the gym so of course they are super supportive and ready to help me with anything I need.

What’s your game plan for 2013?
I would like to get in at least 3 amateur fights by summers end. At that time I would like to assess my situation with my coaches and see if I am ready to make the transition to the pro level. But I won’t commit to a date. It could be earlier or later depending on what opportunities and circumstances are in my path.

What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring? I enjoy typical girly thinks like shopping and stuff. I like to be out doors when its warm cooking out and being outside. I like hanging out with my kid and friends. Nothing real impressive.

What’s the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
Nothing. Everything I listen to is awesome!

Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
I love watching any sort of combat sport, wrestling, kickboxing, boxing. I like watching strong man competitions and am wowed by cross fit competitiors. Track and field is always an interesting one. I find competitive gymnastics to be very amazing and cheer when stunts and gymnastics are used. Using the human body to do some cool shiz is fun to watch and beats watching a bunch of folks chase a ball around.

Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, what’s going through your head in that moment?
I feel mean. Offended. Like I am going to punish that person for being willing to fight me. You don’t take fights you don’t feel as though you could win so now I’m going to show you what you signed up for.

I love martial arts. it’s a huge part of my life for myself and my son. We live a lifestyle most fitted to being competitors. I enjoy training, competing, learning, writing, and talking about mma. I would like to thank everyone who supports me and has given me the opportunity to be involved in mma. My coach Scott Elliott for always pushing me to improve every aspect of myself. My teammates Jessamyn Duke and Adam Fritz for rolling and sparring my face off and making me better everyday. My son for being such a hard worker and such a good little man, he will be a champ. Id like to thank WVFight Sportsradio for the opportunity they have provided me as well as Bluegrass MMA media for their support, help, and opportunity they have provided me. Fever Fight Wear for their continued support. Hardrock MMA for their support of myself and the women involved in the four matches they will host on this card. Funky Monkey MMA media for this interview.

How did you get into MMA?
Well for one I have always been a fan of mma since I first laid eyes on the sport, but I never once believes I'd actually be doing it, after high school I received a couple football scholarships which I ended up taking around my 3rd year of college I just wasn't happy doing what I was doing, stressed out over teammates not doing their job so I ended up having a huge load on my shoulders and I got tired of it. So one day I decided to take a light heavy match up with no trainers no one and got my first KO in the first 10 seconds of the first round and said to my self this is where my life needs to be !

What is your favorite aspect of MMA? (grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.)
my favorite aspect of mma I endure myself the most in, is striking, I love to exchange strikes in the middle of the cage

What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
it means alot being fighter especially to myself, I don't care much for what others say, cause I'm the one who sacrificed everything I love and have to be in this opportunity!

What separates you from every other fighter
I think my sense of aggression and heart separates me from alot of fighters! I'm always willing to sit there and fight until some one drops!

If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
If I could have one dream fight honestly alot of people would probably pick some one who is pro but I would love a rematch with Justin driggers out of extreme courture but since I have made a weight class change it's almost out of sight now.

What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
To keep it simple I want to be remembered as one of the greatest fighters ever and also the steel heart I have every time I entered the cage

Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
I've made mistakes in all my fights this far tho I have won and I still haven't fought up to my standards yet so in my words I haven't gotten to my greatest accomplishment yet but that time will come January 18th

Your nickname is "Ubah Kan" how did you get your nickname?
Well I started off my career going by "bam bam" but as I come to find out a pro has my nickname, but as time went on a few of my friends and teammates have led to calling me "Ubah Kan" which is Mayan for war serpent!

How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
After fights and when I'm not training I love enjoying my time out enjoying the life around us seeing people and also I spend a huge part of my time with my dogs shadow and Lola two pitbulls I have had since they were born

Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
Actually no a big part of my family wasn't supportive of it, only two were my brother and sister. But there has been one person who has stuck by me through thick and thin and that's my best friend briana Maduray!

Whats your gameplan for 2013?
Ohh man 2013 is. Going to be a huge year for me, lets see well I'm fighting for tuff n uff January 18 at south point against Shane Johnson for the 155lb title, which will be my last Amatuer fight before I go pro, and hopefully I can set up a fight for my pro debut between June and July ill also have pan ams for jiu jitsu here in the next couple months!

If you could fight anyone outside of the MMA world who would it be?
theres no human on the outside world of fighting I would fight the only person I fight is my self to learn and build my self to the ultimate level

What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
Some of my hobbies out side of fighting include tattooing, playing with my dogs, and just enjoying our world!

Whats the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
I don't own a iPod hahaha I have an IPhone but yet have I put music on it the answer is no hahaha

Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
I sure appreciate all sport of all cultures, but if I had to choose I'd say rugby is my favorite to watch.

Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, whats going through your head in that moment?
my mind honestly goes blank all I can think about is the cage door locking and the referee saying lets fight ! I look at as another day to live what you train for

Who are you fighting next?
Im fighting Shane Biggs Johnson for the 155lb tuff n Uff title January 18 at the south point here Las Vegas

Frederico Moncaio

Interview with Frederico Moncaio who is an amateur mixed martial artist with a perfect record of 7-0. Frederico Moncaio widely known as "Fred" is currently one of the top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt prospects in the world and has been training since he was 16 under Master Popovitch. Early on Fred showed great promise and dominated the intermediate divisions throughout Florida. He has gone on to win advanced division titles at such quality tournaments as NAGA, Grappler's Quest, and Copa America. After an outstanding 3rd place finish at the 2009 no-gi World Jiu Jitsu tournament in the purple belt division, he was promoted to brown belt and continued his way up the ladder by winning the Pan American championship. Moncaio has looked impressive in various absolute brackets knocking off many blackbelts. One of his most notable tournaments was at the NAGA absolute division in 2008 where he went even with UFC vet Carmelo Marrero in the finals losing only by advantage where he was outweighed by over 50 pounds !!! If that is any indicator of Moncaio's future after only 4 and half years of training, the sky is the limit.

Mercedes White

Interview with Mercedes White, who is an amateur mixed martial artist with a perfect record of 1-0. Mercedes also owns the Luta Elite MMA company and manages upcoming mixed martial artists.

How did you get in to the sport?
I started in the sport in 1999 as a ring girl for local shows and for KOTC. I fell in love with the sport at Rage in the Cage 2 when I watched my friend Gabe Casillas Win over Derrick Surnoff with a one punch KO in just 1 second in the first round.

What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
I am more of a striker, prefer to find my range and work from there when I started my right straight was money but now as I have progressed my Left Jab is lethal.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
My inspiration is my family. Our whole house trains and or fights. We truly have a fight family. Anthony Birchak is a Pro fighter and his son Van is 4 and he is incredibly talented and loves being in the gym. My two daughters ages 9 and 13 train as well and they love it. In a male dominated arena my family inspires me to break the glass ceiling on a daily basis. Show my girls that with hard work and determination you can truly be successful and happy doing something you love.

Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
I am blessed to have the ability to train with several camps. However my home and heart belongs to Apex Mixed Martial Arts in Tucson Az under my coaches Joey Rivera, Ed West, Anthony Birchak, and Freddie Lux. Its great for me because all of my coaches are close to my size so that they are my training partners too. With not many women in MMA it is hard to be able to get time in with another girl so your only option is to train and spar with guys. I however am very lucky to have some top level female partners with Cortney Casey and Brenna Larkin.
My BJJ camp is North Side BJJ under the instruction of Sean Huff.
When camp picks up I will also head over and train at Rise Combat under UFC fighter Chris Cariaso.
When given the opportunity to travel we head to Xtreme Couture and train with Tim "Bring the Pain" Lane. He's an incredible coach and has brought my striking to another level.

What is your favorite aspect of MMA? (grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.)
I like learning new things and my favorite aspect of MMA is when I am able to execute a move or combination that I have been working on with my coaches. You can learn as much as you want but if you are unable to apply it in live sparring then it's worthless.

What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
It means a lot to me to actually be able to consider myself a fighter now. I have been involved in the sport for 14 years and have trained off and on since 2007. I had my first smoker fight in 2011 for Gym wars and that was a great experience. I still did not feel like a fighter. Not until I had my first fight for Tuff N Uff did I feel I could truly consider myself a fighter. To join the ranks of a very small % of people is a blessing.

What separates you from every other fighter?
What separates me from other WMMA fighters is that I'm not only a fighter but I own my own company Luta Elite MMA and I manage Pro and Amateur fighters both Male and Female. I truly love every aspect of the fight game and plan on making my mark on the industry.

If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
My dream fight would be with Meisha Tate. I think she is an amazing athlete and has proven to be a very positive role model in the WMMA community.

What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
Hopefully I will get a highlight reel KO by the end of the year.

Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
Only having one fight thus far I feel that is still to be written. My story has just begun.

Your nickname is "Zombie Killer" how did you get your nickname?
I am a huge Zombie lover and all things Zombie I'll find it. I already have my Zombie Apocalypse plan in place and so it just came from there. That and whatever you hit me with in practice from kicks punches to the kitchen sink I seem to keep on coming forward zombie-ish lol

How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
Well like I said before we are a fight family. So we are constantly training or doing tournaments. In my down time we love taking the kids to movies, going hiking, and playing Black ops 2.

Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
Yes very supportive my mom was of course nervous about the injury aspect but she has always been behind me in whatever I want to do. My dad shows off my fight photos to all his friends and co workers. My friends are amazing and they have my back and are my biggest supporters/fans.

Whats your gameplan for 2013?
I will be dropping down to 135 for 2013. I am not going to fight again till mid year as I put my job as a manager first and want to make sure that all the fighters have fights prior to me fighting again. We have signed one of our top females to XFC to make her pro debut later this year. 2013 myself and Luta Elite MMA will truly make it's mark on the MMA scene.

If you could fight anyone outside of the MMA world who would it be?
I would fight Scarlett Johansson (black widow) because I'm kinda nerdy and would love to see how that would end. Lets be honest who wouldn't want to see that happen.

What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
Hiking, playing video games (black ops 2), photography, Love cooking and baking. Spending time with my kids.

Whats the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
I LOVE MUSIC. It makes me happy it always finds a way to really know what I am going through at that time. I have little girls so obviously Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift are on there. I am not embarrassed of either because it makes me happy when me and my girls sing along to the songs together in the car.

Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
There's other sports? Lol Growing up I was a cheerleader for Football, Basketball and soccer. I always loved Hockey but no surprise it was because of the intensity and fighting. I really don't watch or care to watch any other sport other then MMA.

Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, whats going through your head in that moment?
Headed to the tunnel waiting for the fight before me to finish. Catching a glimpse of my opponent waiting too. I got my ear buds on listening to my music (The Weekend-The Zone dubstep version) that song always takes me to another place. I flip the switch in my head and say my prayer to St Sebastian. On repeat I hear Ed West in my head. He has my mental game on lock and his words invoke clarity to what would otherwise be an extremely stressful moment.

Who are you fighting next?
No fights lined up yet I have been offered several but as I said before the Team comes first before I will take another fight. As well with me dropping down a weight class I want to make sure my weight is on point.

I want to thank all my coaches who have taken their time to help mold and guide me on my journey. The fighters that I manage that have put their trust in me and have made our team more then a team but a fight family. My family and friends for being my biggest supporters and fans.
Anthony Birchak for not only being my coach and training partner. He is my biggest critic and fan at the same time. He is my best friend and business partner as well. Without him I wouldn't be where I am at today. Kevin currently holds a perfect professional record of 5-0 and went 10-2-1 as an amateur he held the Fight Lab Promotions Lightweight championship, Elite Championship Cage Fighting Lightweight championship, and the ISKA SC State Lightweight championship. In addition to MMA, Kevin has competed and won numerous grappling tournaments and was also the 2011 NC State Golden Gloves champion.

How did you get in to the sport?
It was something that I always wanted to do. I remember way back when you couldn't watch it on TV before DVDs were out yet, my twin brother borrowed UFC 19 from a friend. I think we watched that video 100 times in 1 week. We looked all over Buffalo for a place to train, but that type a gym just wasn't around back then. Fast forward to 2008, living in Charlotte, NC, I still had they itch to learn how to fight. At this point, it still wasn't what you see today with MMA, BJJ, Muay Thai gyms popping up all over town, but there was a few out there and with a little research I found a good Gym. I trained for 14 months took my first fight and things just started to get crazy from there. Coincidentally My bro started to train at a gym back in Buffalo the same month as I.

If the sport of MMA never existed, what would you be doing?
Before I started training I worked in debt collections. I made good money in it, and I would imagine that I would be managing an agency somewhere.

Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
I train with Hayastan-IMB and Dyme Boxing in Charlotte, NC. This is where I started, and this is where I will finish.

What separates you from every other fighter?
My coach and I were just joking around about this. He says I am slow, I am not the most athletic, I don't pick things up with a snap of finger. What I do have is a work ethic, I am naturally strong, I am dedicated and determined. With all of that I am able to set a pace in the cage that few can keep up with and few expect that I can keep, but when its the start of the 3rd round an I look like the fight is just about to begin most break mentally. That is where I stand apart from most.

Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
Everyone was and is very supportive. None of them understand why I fight but they all support me. None more than my wife who with out her support it would have been a short career.

Jessy Rose

The Funky Monkey (MMA) Mixed Martial Arts News interviews professional mixed martial artist Jessy Rose
How did you get in to the sport?
I actually started Kickboxing with an ex back in Townsville. Once we broke up I decided to commit 100% to the sport and obviously MMA was just the natural progression. Since making the commitment, I have never looked back!

What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
Haha, I would love to answer this question in detail but then I would be giving away some of my secrets….. I love striking first and foremost but I do have a few sneaky submissions that I plan on attacking in the next few fights.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
This is a tough question as I don’t have just one person who inspires me in particular. First of all is definitely my partner Chris “Kaos” Bridgewater. He has had over 100 fights in various styles and 17 professional MMA fights. He also has had most of his MMA fights after a bad accident that left him with permanent spinal damage. The Doctors told him he would never be able to compete again, but he was determined that he wasn’t going to let his injury stop him from doing what he loves. He is one of the hardest working, most motivated, dedicated and driven people I know. I am lucky to have him to train with every day as he always inspires me to work harder than ever.
Other than that, I would have to say Frankie Edgar is another inspiration to me. He is my all-time favourite fighter. The man is TOUGH! No matter what his opponents throw at him, he just keeps coming back harder and stronger than ever. He’s one of the few fighters that gets better as each round passes. Plus his boxing and footwork are PHENOMENAL! Every time I train, it is with his style in mind.

Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
We have actually just started our own gym and fight team, called “Ludus Dominatus”. It means “School of Domination” in Latin. We figured we’d take our wonderful sport back to it’s extreme basics, being the Gladiatorial Arena. Majority of our conditioning materials are hand made and we love getting dirty and sweaty! So I will primarily be training out of Ludus Dominatus and making the rounds of a few other gyms in order to get my sparring practice in.

What is your favorite aspect of MMA? (grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.)
Even though my background is kickboxing, I am a wrestler at heart. I absolutely love getting my hands on my opponent and being able to maneuver them, take them down, and control them from all positions. I am flying a Collegian Wrestler over here mid year to live with me and be my full time Wrestling Coach as the style definitely stole my heart!

What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
I don’t consider myself a “fighter” as such. I prefer the term “Mixed Martial Artist”. Because that is what I am. I work every single day to better myself in multiple styles, and I plan on still competing in kickboxing, boxing, wrestling, and submission grappling throughout my MMA career. For me, the fight is just another achievement. It’s the ultimate test of character and ability. It’s the best way for me to work out what in my training is working, and what needs improvement. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE the fight! But it isn’t the sole reason for me training.

What separates you from every other fighter
Look, all fighters work hard. We all go through the same pain and torment, mental anguish, every single day. And we’re all unique in our own way. I believe what seperates me from some others, is that I am truly passionate about all aspects of being a Mixed Martial Artist. I believe in balancing the destructive with the creative. Hence the reason I write a lot, I paint, I draw, I meditate, I stretch, and I take care of my mind and body on every aspect, not just from a training point of view.

If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
Ronda Rousey! We are in the same weight category and I would LOVE to fight her, and BEAT her. This is my ultimate goal when it comes to fighting in the USA. Otherwise I would love to fight against someone who is a lot more experienced than me. Like Megumi Fujii…. To pit myself against someone who has been doing this for her whole life, would be the ultimate test!

What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
I want to be remembered for always giving 100%. A perfect record would be a treat too ;)
I want to be remembered for giving back to the sport and increasing peoples love and awareness of MMA. I try to do this by writing for various websites and always offering help to new or existing fighters whenever they need it.

Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
My greatest accomplishment was finally getting my first MMA fight. After about 8 match ups, with all falling through, plus being in hospital with a brain heamorrhage which nearly put me out of action for life, I finally trained myself back to full health and got my chance in the cage in 2012.

Your nickname is "Heart Breaker" how did you get your nickname?
My nickname is the “Heartbreaker”. This was given to me by my coaches Igor Breakenback and Lee Sang Tai after my second kickboxing fight. Because the girl I fought had such a massive following and her coaches thought she was certain to win, and apparently I broke a lot of hearts that night when I beat her extremely convincingly!

How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
Still training! But seriously, in my down time, I spend it playing xbox with my partner Chris, looking after our house, writing, creating, and looking after my 4yr old step-daughter. I have a happy life!

Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
My family have been incredibly supportive, even though my Mama was terrified at my first fight! As soon as she saw me fighting though, she couldn’t have been prouder because she knows how hard I work for this and how passionate I am about it. I have had some negativity from friends…. But they aren’t part of my friendship circle anymore. I believe in surrounding yourself with like-minded people who are going to positively influence your life. Life is too short for negativity or people who will bring you down.

Whats your gameplan for 2013?
WOW! 2013 is proving to be MASSIVE! I have a fight on a brand new Brisbane promotion, followed by one against one of Australia’s top female boxers (who just happens to be a hell of a lot more experienced than me) which could be on Pay Per View. The looking at fighting in Bali, the USA and back to Canberra for an 8 woman eliminator tournament. There is a slight chance we will be heading to Europe at the end of the year for another show….. Massive year!

If you could fight anyone outside of the MMA world who would it be?
Outisde of the MMA world…. Hmmmm….. That’s a tough one! Probably Will Ferrel! I love that man, he is hilarious, and I think if I started a fight with him it would be the funniest thing ever!

What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
Writing I LOVE to write…. I recently got a new computer and am extremely excited to be able to write more for my website TasteTheMat.com. I also love shooting sh!t on Xbox with Chris.

Whats the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
I have Justin Beiber’s “Baby”……. I downloaded it to tease a friend with and it just never left!

Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
Lol… Kickboxing??? Other than that I enjoy any combat sports, plus some good old violent Ice Hockey is always a treat to watch I don’t really watch anything other than kickboxing or MMA these days though.

Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, whats going through your head in that moment?
“Jeez I wish it would hurry up!” Generally, I don’t get nervous before a fight. I am confident in my training and no matter what the outcome I know that I will have always put in everything I have. So usually before the fight, I am working on my movement, staying warm and just having a joke with my coaches.

Who are you fighting next?
I have a fight coming up against Erin McGowan who is 14-2 in boxing and recently fought for a World Title. I am super excited for this one as it will be my first chance to come up against someone who is truly successful within their sport. I am not saying that the girls I have fought previously aren’t, but this will be the most experienced opponent I have had.

Any final words?
I would like to say Thank You to my main sponsors Unrivaled MMA. Hayley and Cory from Unrivaled are always amazing! They make time for me whenever I need something no matter what it is. And aside from being my sponsors, they have become great friends. Lucky they make awesome clothing and equipment!
I would also like to thank my partner Chris Bridgewater. Without him I wouldn’t have my own gym, a beautiful house, an amazing family…. He also inspires me each and every day to work hard for what I want. Without him I would still be sleeping on a couch, struggling for money and working hard just to make ends meet.
Other than that, I would like to thank my Sydney coach, Igor Breakenback, for always believing in me and teaching me some invaluable lessons, both physically and mentally. And thank you to my family for always supporting me no matter what I do.

Nick Renfro

Interview with amateur mixed martial artist Nick Renfro, who fights March 1st at the Arnold Classic Mma Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Festival, against Lance Phillips. Nick looks to put on a dominating performance infront of a sold out crowd live at the LC Pavilion tomorrow night!

1. How did you get in to the sport?
I first became interested in MMA after attending a couple different army combative training courses while I was in the National Guard. That was just the tip of the iceberg.

2. What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
There is nothing more beautiful to me than an unexpected, nicely placed, death from above overhand right to face!

3. Who is your biggest inspiration?
My mother and father are my strength. They are responsible for the base of who I am today.

4. Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
I’m training with The Kennel Fight Club in Springfield, IL. I’m training with amazing talent here including: Bobby Brents, Matt Veach, Brian Foster, Dustin Jacoby, Quartus Stitt, Louis Dewerdt, Justin Robbins and more! It is truly an honor to be able to train with such talent.

5. What is your favorite aspect of MMA? (grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.)
I have no favorite aspect. There isn’t just one aspect that you are allowed to focus on. If you’re a great striker you better have some decent ground defense. The same goes for ground fighting BJJ and wrestling practioners. The sport is evolving and it forces you to continue to better yourself.

6. What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
Being a fighter is special. A fighter is anyone that goes to battle with him or herself on a constant basis, continually trying to improve themselves. In the cage, just as in life, you are responsible for the outcome. It’s just you.

7. What separates you from every other fighter?
As an amateur,I feel it is a blessing to be able to train with SO MANY professionals! Oh and I’m very well trained in the use of C4 and other explosives …..That’s a nice degree of separation.

8. If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
Herschel Walker. At 50 years old that man has amazed me my entire life and continues to do so! It would be an honor.

9. What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
No matter where I end up in this sport I want people to say “That guy never quit. He had big heart, in AND outside the cage.”

10. Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
I recently just won my first 205lbs Title Belt. I’m sure there will be more to come but this first one (in front of my family and in memory of a recently passed battle buddy) was special to me and always will be.

11. Your nickname is "RoboCop" how did you get your nickname?
Hahahahaha….I often get REALLY tight while sparring with some of our Pros. I end up moving like a robot that just attempts to seek, destroy and SLAM! Plus I’m actually a police officer by profession. 1+1=2

12. How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
When I’m not training, I’m either at work or spending time with family and/ or friends. If you are getting some of what little time I have, then you most definitely are special to me. Time is something we can never get back.

13. Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
I’ve often picked dangerous things to do with my life. At Western Illinois University I played Rugby, in the military I Combat Engineer which put me in harm’s way, and now I deal with society’s finest people on a daily basis. So my family and friends were not too surprised when I decided to pick up the sport of MMA. They have been more than supportive win or lose…….and I hate to lose.

14. Whats your gameplan for 2013?
Live life. Train Hard. Eat Well. “The trouble is, you think you have time”.

15. If you could fight anyone outside of the MMA world who would it be?
Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church. I would pay to make this happen!!!

16. What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
Outside of the sport I enjoy helping people achieve their fitness goals, CrossFit, Food, movies, going out with friends, and NAPS. I friggin love naps..

17. Whats the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
I really enjoy R&B so as I drive I’m probably jamming out some lovey dovey stuff

18. Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
Rugby, Football and College Basketball. Athletics in general are damn fun to watch.

19. Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, whats going through your head in that moment?
It usually goes a little something like this: “Do I need to puke??? No Nick you’re fine. Wait…maybe you do need to puke. No you’re good to g……….BLEaaaaHHHHHH!!!! Yeah, I guess needed to puke. Ok, now let’s go have fun!”

20. When is your next fight and who is your opponent?
March 1st at the Arnold Classic in Columbus Ohio against Lance Phillips (3-0).

21. If you could have a rematch with anyone who would it be and why?
It’s in the past, just move forward and get better.

Any final words?
I want to thank my teammates at The Kennel Fight Club for pushing me and being my toughest critics (especially Louis Dewerdt lol). They all make me better every day. My family and friends I cannot thank enough for all the support. They are all the fans I need in this world.
I also want to thank my sponsor Complete Nutrition-Springfield Il in Springfield, IL for helping me fuel my body, T.C. Roesch and all of my gym family at Roesch's gym for the constant support and awesome training facility.
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle”.

Louis Dewerdt

Interview with Professional mixed martial artist and undefeated professional boxer, Louis Dewerdt. Louis competes this weekend at the Arnold Sports Festival MMA Festival March 1st at the LC Pavilion, taking on Official XFC Veteran Marcus Finch
How did you get in to the sport?
I really just stumbled into the sport honestly. I took a class with a friend of mine when I was 18 and instantly got hooked.
What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
I've been told I'm quite fond of the triangle. lol

Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
I train out of Springfield, Illinois with the The Kennel Fight Club.

If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
Would have to go with Forrest Griffin on this one for the fact I know it would be a hard fought gritty battle of wills.

Whats your gameplan for 2013?
To turn my career around from where I am at now. I went 17-3 as an ammy and was ranked # 1 at 205 & 185 in the midwest. Somehow when I made the jump as a pro I lost something mentally and have been falling apart in the cage this past year. Not to take anything away from the people I lost to but I should be sitting at 6-0 right now with no questions asked. I feel confident though with the newly restructured gym/team that I'll shine this year as I once did as an ammy and how I have been in my boxing bouts ( 4-0 pro boxing record).

What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
I'm a nerd so I'm always up for a good video game to occupy my time with.

Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
Really enjoy watching/playing basketball.

When is your next fight and who is your opponent?
I'm set to fight March 1st in Columbus, Ohio at the Arnolds. My opponent is a very game Marcus finch that is riding a KO win in the XFC.

If you could have a rematch with anyone who would it be and why?
Haha, hands down I would go with my teammate Dustin Jacoby. We fought like 3 years ago as ammys and he got the better of me that night and for some reason I've wanted to run it back ever since. Of course we have some intense sparring/grappling sessions at the gym from time to time.

Any final words?
Nothing much to say other then I've had an amazing training camp for this fight and I really appreciate all the support from my gym and my mother. Without them I wouldn't be able to do what I love to do. Also, if you can make the Arnolds I wouldn't miss the fight between Marcus and I because one of us will be going to sleep that night.

"The Fight Pastor" Brandon Beals

Interview with star of the documentary film, Fight Pastor, Brandon Beals. He is an avid mixed martial arts fan and a blogger. He also happens to be the pastor of Canyon Creek Church in Mill
Creek, WA. A church he started with several friends over 6 years ago.

How did you get involved in the sport of mixed martial arts?
I am always quick to remind everyone that I am not a fighter. I am a chaplain and pastor to fighters. (Though I was a wrestler in high school and did martial arts while I was in college.) I have been a huge UFC fan since the very first PPV. I started blogging on MMA about 6 years ago. I would interview fighters, make fight picks, and just about anything else you could think of. I was also hosting UFC fight nights at my church. Basically, I would get the UFC fights and invite anyone who wanted to come to fill our auditorium and watch it.
So that is basically how it all started out. It has developed into a great ministry where I minister to whatever needs a fighter, trainer, or fan might have.

What's your favorite strike/submission to see used in a fight?
My favorite strike to watch in a fight is a nice hard leg kick. My favorite submission (in honor of Ronda's fight) is a tight armbar.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration is Jesus. I'm also a pretty big Ronald Reagan fan
There are a number of Christian MMA fighters today that also make me very proud. I highly respect Ben Henderson and I think Michael McDonald is a stud. Both of those guys represent Jesus very well.

Where do the fighters train the come to your church?
Most of the fighters in my church train at Charlies Combat Club in Everett, WA or AKA in Kirkland, WA with Matt Hume. I also chaplain some fighters out of Grudge in Colorado as well as Victory MMA in San Diego.

What is your favorite aspect of MMA? (grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.)
Being a wrestler I appreciate guys who utilize wrestling and dominate the fight on the ground. A nice slam makes a fight for me.

What do you appreciate most about the fighters?
I appreciate the hard work and dedication that these guys put into their trade. To be an effective fighter you have to be a student of many disciplines. To be a champion fighter you have to have a never say die, don't quit attitude. I love that fighters are insanely disciplined, dedicated, and tenacious.

What separates a Christian fighter from any other fighter?
The Christian fighters, I believe, are able to fight with a greater perspective. They realize that everything doesn't rise and fall on whether they win or lose. Ultimately, everything in this life is about Jesus. They fight to represent Jesus well, win, lose or draw. I think they are able to keep the victories from swelling their heads and their defeats from crushing their spirits. They understand that life is about more than the sum total of their win/ loss record.
I don't think it is by coincidence that a number of the UFC champion fighters are strong Men of God.

What is your dream fight to see?
Like just about every other MMA fan in the world, I want to see GSP fight Anderson Silva. I also want to see Jon Jones fight Junior Dos Santos. Finally, Ben Henderson fight Jose Aldo. Those would be killer fights! I will fly anywhere in the world to see those.

What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
I want to be remembered as someone who represented Jesus well.

Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in your career?
My greatest accomplishment is baptizing dozens of fighters.

Whats your schedule like?
Being a minister I have a life style job. Meaning that everything I do is wrapped up in being a Pastor. I also try to fit in a couple hours to work out every day and as much time with my family as possible.

How have those around you responded to your MMA ministry?
I dealt with a lot of controversy and criticism initially. A couple years ago I was on the front page of the New York Times as well as featured in a documentary on Current TV. Within the MMA community my ministry was almost universally embraced. In the Christian community it was very controversial. I took a ton of heat. There were many times where I had to bite my tongue and just let other "brothers" in Christ vent. Fortunately as MMA has become more mainstream over the years the controversy has mellowed out.

Whats your gameplan for 2013?
Continue to mentor all the fighters in my church and the other guys I chaplain around the nation. As well as love my wife and kids. I don't know if I am allowed to talk about it or not but I also filmed a reality TV show pilot for Spike TV with a bunch the fighters in my church.
Our ministry is also featured in the documentary, Fight Church which should debut sometime this year.

What are some of your hobbies?
MMA is my hobby.

Whats the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
My kids are ashamed I like the song Stronger by Kelly Clarkson. I was a child of the 80's so I love heavy metal.

Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
Football, baseball, and basketball.

What is the next big fight you will be at?
One of the fighters in my church, Jonny Gilbertson, is an amateur fighter who holds titles in several weight classes. He is about to make his pro debut. Pretty pumped for him and I think he has UFC potential. Wouldn't surprise me if he was on The Ultimate Fighter in the next year.

Any final words?

Lana Kate

The Funky Monkey (MMA) Mixed Martial Arts News Interview with Lana Kate "The Black Mamba", she is a professional mixed martial artist who fights out of Melbourne, Australia

1. How did you get in to the sport?
I started Muay Thai basically for fitness and out of curiosity. At the time I was in a rut. I was doing a heap of resistance training and conditioning (I had Arnold arms!!) and needed something different and decided Muay Thai was for me and I instantly feel in love with the sport. I had done boxing and karate for years on and off but Muay Thai brought so much more the table. I love the kicks, knees and especially the elbows. Thai is such a brutal and technical style of martial arts.
I come from a fairly sport orientated family. My dad was a marathon runner out of my two sisters one is an elite marathon runner the other a tri athlete. I was always a little different and extreme. Growing up I was mainly into surf life saving and especially loved it when the swells were huge, surfing, dirt bikes and surprisingly I did ballet for almost 15 years. Sport is just in my blood. I would hate to have nothing I was interested in. MMA was just a natural progression and I have never looked back. It’s so challenging in many aspects but that’s what I love about it. I get keener every day just to keep on improving. It’s not an easy road but it’s a hell of allot of fun.
Mixed Martial Arts teaches you many valuable lessons.

2. What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
That is an easy one to answer... elbows!!! But no one has been brave enough to agree to fight A class rules with me... yet I also have a few other areas I’m working on but then I would be giving away my secrets. It’s MMA so I really love them all.

3. Who is your biggest inspiration?
My trainers for sure! I am blessed to have such a fantastic network of family, friends, trainers and elite sporting associates. They all inspire me with their passion for sport, fitness and health. I admire dedication and discipline.
I would have to say number one though is my 5 year old son Ashton. The enthusiasm he has for life, learning and love amazes me every day. I think as we grow older we tend to lose these qualities. He reminds me everyday how important it is. That in its self is inspiration.

4. Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
Because I am from Melbourne It is hard to find a full MMA gym. I’m lucky I work out of a gym that has a whole section dedicated to MMA. I do my jitz at 10th Planet Melbourne and I love the guys and girls there...such a great vibe and culture.
The rest of my training remains a secret at this stage. I like to move around and gain as much knowledge as possible. The more I learn the more educated, well rounded fighter I will be.

5. What is your favorite aspect of MMA? (grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.)
Everything and anything that controls my opponent and hurts them

6. What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
I prefer the term Mixed martial artist as the fight is only the end product of many hours of training in multiple styles. It means I’m confident in my own skin, I know how to protect myself and I’m strong. I think this is important for a female.
I know in myself what I can do, how far I can be pushed and how much more I can keep on learning. I get tested every day and it is not always easy but it builds my sense of self. The body is an amazing piece of machinery.

7. What separates you from every other fighter?
I have no limits and I can be pushed a long way before I break. The more hurt I get the better I get!
8. If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
Cris Cyborg she is a beast! I would love to go head to head.

9. What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
I want to be remembered for giving back to the sport and growing peoples love and awareness of WMMA and MMA.

10. Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
Probably not losing my mind with 38 hours of training a week, working, maintaining a home, dieting and raising a 5 year old!!

11. Your nickname is "The Black Mamba" how did you get your nickname?
A few reasons. Mainly because one of my trainers thinks I have eyes like a snake and I like to strike super fast.

12. How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
With my son, relaxing, eating whatever I want and training others. I am a personal trainer and conditioning coach. I love to give back what the sport MMA gives to me.

13. Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
Yes of course. Its scares the crap out of my Mum and grandparents but she knows I’m tough. We often have a joke about it.

14. What’s your game plan for 2013?
To keep getting better and stronger. I’m afraid of nothing... besides heights ha-ha

15. If you could fight anyone outside of the MMA world who would it be?
Ha- ha I defiantly have the answer that but I won’t name names. I would love to lay a few shots on someone’s mug

16. What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
I love to get outdoors and run and swim. I enjoy studying and learning new things and I love to cook. Though I tell everyone I cannot cook especially my housemate as then he would make me cook for him ha-ha. I haven’t got the time!!!

17. What’s the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
None that I can think of....

18. Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
Motocross and big wave surfing for sure.

19. Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, what’s going through your head in that moment?
“Fuck I’m tired but I’ve got this!!”
It’s so mentally draining.. The months of preparation, travel and excitement is a challenge. Everyone sees the end product besides your trainers and family. There is so much involved behind the scenes. It is defiantly a challenge that changes you.

20. Who are you fighting next?
I have a fight in Canberra for an 8 woman eliminator tournament for Storm Damage. I also have a fight on a brand new Brisbane promotion and maybe an exciting fight in my home town Melbourne.

21. Any final words?
I could go on for hours with all the people I could thank. Mainly my sponsors Advanced Fight Gear, Nutrition Superstore (EU) and CNP Professional Australia and all of my trainers! They are the best in the business Oh and anyone that puts up with my bad mood after hours of training.

Matthew Hobar

The Funky Monkey (MMA) Mixed Martial Arts News interviews LegacyFC competitor Matthew "The Crowbar" Hobar. Matt looks to add another to the win column when he takes on Nelson Salas on April 12th at Legacy Fights 19. Which takes place at the Allen Event center in Dallas, Texas The fight will air live on AXS TV, with the winner likely getting a shot at the title. Matt is an incredibly talented fighter who is determined to leave his mark in mixed martial arts.

How did you get in to the sport?
I got into the sport like many fighters did. I wrestled since the age of 4, won state twice in highschool but didnt wrestle in college b/c i was burned out. After two years of not competing I got that itch and started jiu jitsu which lead me to begin a career in MMA.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration is my Dad. He is just an overall good and honest man. He travels to 3rd world countries and operates on people with facial deformities through his non profit organization called LEAP. He is using his profession to help those in dire need. If fighting gives me the opportunity to help those in need I would love to use it as such.

Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
I am training at Octagon MMA. We are full of young talent that are up on the rise in the MMA world. Many of my teammates are still undefeated, 5-0, 4-0,3-0 and many have fought the best talent in the world including my teammate Sean Spencer who is currently fighting for the UFC and just came of a hard fight fighting up a weight class against Rafael Natal.

What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
Being a fighter means I get to test myself daily. I get to find out what is inside of me and what comes out when I am pushed through struggles and tribulations. A man cannot know himself until he truly has obstacles and suffering to overcome.

Your nickname is "The Crowbar" how did you get your nickname?
I got my nickname back in my youthful wrestling days. My dad and other wrestling parents on the team called me ironman because I was the toughest kid on the team. As I got older I didn't like the whole superhero name so people started calling me crowbar because it was pretty much my last name and still had that tough ring to it and it stuck ever since.

Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
My family and friends were very supportive of me when I started this sport. They saw how much I accomplished in wrestling and saw that it could translate over into fighting. My Dad was very thrilled because he is a 2nd degree black belt and a national champion in Judo for ages 50 in over, so martial arts is in my blood.

Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
I really enjoy extreme sports. I used to be a big time skateboarder when I was young and go snowboarding and wakeboarding whenever I can. Anything that gets my adrenaline going, I love.

What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
My main hobby outside the ring is music. I am a multi-instrumentalist and can play guitar bass drums banjo fiddle piano pretty much anything. Playing music keeps my mind off of stress and allows me to refocus my mind.

Who are you fighting next?
I am fighting Nelson Salas April 12, in Dallas at Allen events center for Legacy FC. Whoever wins this fight will probably fight for the title against Angel Huerta.

Any final words?
I would like to thank my coaches, my teammates, god, my family, Southpaw's Organic Grill :: Uptown, D1Fit CrossFit, Core Power, Gamma Labs, and Punishment Athletics among many others.

Andrea Lee

The Funky Monkey (MMA) Mixed Martial Arts News interviews Andrea Lee

"My record is a bit deceiving at 2-2. I say that because my first loss was a split decision to Jade Dehaas ( a 4-0 fighter at the time) and everyone who saw it said they thought I got robbed. I fought Jade 12 weeks after I gave birth to my daughter and she only got about half of me.
I look forward to rematching Jade. It wont go the distance the next time. The second was another close decision loss to Kristy Kester 4-1 and that fight could really have gone either way. That said I should be 4-0 but I'm not so I move on. In addition I'm 4-1 with 3 ko's and a two time golden gloves boxing champion. " - Andrea Lee

1. How did you get in to the sport?
I was punching guys in the arm at work and they all said I should fight because I hit so hard. A friend introduced me to his coach and the rest is history.

2. What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
At the end of the day I am a striker and I just love to knock people out with whatever works but my Jiu- Jitsu is really catching up and I have some tricky ninja stuff I look forward to showing off soon. I really like knee bars and heel hooks.

3. Who is your biggest inspiration?
My coach who also happens to be my fiancé was the first person to recognize talent in me and he has made me set goals and really believe in myself. He definitely inspires and motivates me.

4. Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
Karate Mafia is my home. Elite Combat is our "sister school" and Brent Mason has been a huge help while my coach was away for the last 20 months. Without Brent my career would have stymied. I am. Excited to have Donny back now though and I think I'm twice the fighter with him as I am without him.

5. What is your favorite aspect of MMA? (grappling, striking, clinch work, etc.)
Like I said I AM a boxer/ kick boxer but what I love most is long range knockouts. I also really love clinch fighting because I can impose my superior size and strength. I'm pretty violent in the clinch and on the ground. In four fights no one has been able to take me down and I'm pretty proud of that. When I've gone to the ground it's been because I took it there.

6. What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
For me being a fighter is a way of life not a hobby. This is my identity not just my passion. I am a fighter from the time I wake up til I fall asleep at night.

7. What separates you from every other fighter?
I look like a woman but I fight like a man. I think most women fighters lack that violent killer instinct and at some point in the fight they are going to do something "girlie" (exception Cris Santos "Cyborg"). I, on the other hand, never make a dainty move. I think I'm just meaner and rougher than most women fighters. I always try to finish. A lot of girls do mma because its "cool". I do it because I really like to knock people (guy or gals) out.

8. If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
Well I'm a 125er and that weight class doesn't get much attention but I think Zoila Gurgel is the best 125er out there so I guess I'd like to test myself against her.

9. What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
People only remember champions. No one remembers contenders.

10. Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
My next two fights are for amateur 125 lb titles. Ask me this question after may 11 and I'll be able to tell you I hold two 125 lb belts.

11. Your nickname is "KGB" how did you get your nickname?
Donny has been calling me KGB for a while now because he says I'm ruthless, secretive. More than that he says I look like an Eastern European or Russian chick. I don't see it lol.

12. How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
I train 5 hrs per day 6 days per week and I also help teach at the gym. There isn't much time left after I leave the gym so I try to spend all of it with my daughter who is a future world champion by the way. Lol.

13. Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
They all looked at me kinda weird at first because my personality is the antithesis of a fighter. I am very sweet, as embarrassing as that is to say. So I guess no one thought I had fight in me until they saw me flip the switch. Now they are all believers.

14. Whats your gameplan for 2013?
This year I just want to be very active. 6 fights at least. My immediate goals are to reach the 2016 Olympic Games which will keep me from turning pro til after the games. But I want to fight as often as possible so that Im ready to turn pro as soon as my amateur status isn't important anymore.

15. If you could fight anyone outside of the MMA world who would it be?
My fiancé s ex girlfriend lol.

16. What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
I just don't have time for hobbies. I like to go to the lake or relax by the pool but that's about all I have time for. Being a fighter and a mommy takes up all my time. Yeah I'm pretty boring. Lol

17. Whats the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
I have a couple of Taylor swift songs. All of those are embarrassing. Lol

18. Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
All combat sports obviously. Also I played volleyball in high school so I really like volley ball and beach volleyball.

19. Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, whats going through your head in that moment?
I think "oh s##t I hope I don't trip and fall on the way to the cage". Lol

20. Who are you fighting next?
I fight Devaney Clayton for Bullocks flyweight strap on April 27 at festival plaza in Shreveport and two weeks later, may 11, I fight Magali Gaudit for Ascend Combats flyweight title. I've wanted both of these opponents for a while.

Any final words?
I am a young fighter and most of you have not seen me yet. If you come check me out I think you will be entertained. I am a finisher and I always put on a good show. Thanks to my coach Donny Aaron and my team at Karate Mafia for giving me the ingredients to succeed. Thanks to Brent Mason for welcoming me and helping me during Donny's Absence. I don't have any sponsors to thank because I don't have any. The only thing I hate more than interviews is asking for money. Lol. Sponsors take note your name could be here. Anyway I'll see y'all at the show.

A guy who came to fight hell or high water.

Jeremy Ross

The Funky Monkey (MMA) Mixed Martial Arts News interviews professional mixed martial artist,Jeremy Ross. Hailing from Connecticut, Jeremy is quickly making his way up the ranks. Be sure to catch him in action April 13th when he takes on Jimmy Davidson at Cage Titans FC XIV. Jeremy is a very accomplished fighter and BJJ practicioner, who is no stranger to the cage and has been fighting for over 6 years. He is currently a BJJ brown belt. Ross, though known for his BJJ, since 5 out of his 6 wins are via submission chokes, has very superb striking and looks to become crowned champion on April 13th. Do not miss this incredible fight live from Plymouth Memorial Hall in Plymouth, Massachusetts!

How did you get in to the sport?
My brother was a huge Bruce Lee fan. As far back as I can remember I always watched his movies. So from there came my first martial arts class.

What's your favorite strike/submission to use in any fight?
Im a huge fan of all strikes and submissions.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration has to be my older brother Jerry.

Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
I train with Gladiator Bjj in West Springfield.

What is your favorite aspect of MMA?
I love all aspects of mma but if I have to pick one. I have to go with dedication. Anyone can train.. But it takes a special person to dedicate themselves to become a good martial artist.

What does it mean (for you) to be a fighter?
I don't like the idea of being a fighter. I consider myself a martial artist. Martial arts is my way of life it has made me who I am. So it means everything to me.

What separates you from every other fighter?
I think everyone has something different from the next . For me I'd have to say its the mental focus that I put into my warm up before I walk to the cage.

If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
I'd like to fight whoever is at the top of my weight class at the time. And I'm not talking regional I'd want the best in the world.

What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
When I'm done I'd be happy to remember as the guy who did things his way. Win or lose the guy who always went for the finish. The guy who pushed the pace in all his fights.

Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
I don't have one that I consider the best. The one that sticks out the most has nothing to do with me fighting. Its the night that my team went undefeated with like 6 or 7 guys fighting on the same card. I had a big hand in the training of all the guys for that night. So I'd say that's my biggest accomplishment to date.

How do you spend your time when you're not training for a fight?
When I don't have a fight to train for I'm still in the gym training. Like I said before its my lifestyle.

Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of MMA?
Yeah, I never had anyone ask why or are you sure this is what you want to do? They may have thought I was a bit crazy..lol but they always were supportive.

Whats your gameplan for 2013?
2013 is all about Gladiator Bjj.. I just wanna help keep our team growing and giving back to my coaches and teammates.

I've always been into motocross. I think if I had a bike at young age I'd would have given racing a big shot. Besides that I love custom cars and trucks.

Maybe more embarrassing then a song might be the fact I don't own a iPod..LOL

Do you dig any sports other than MMA?
I like to follow boxing.

Its 10 minutes before you're walking out to the fight, whats going through your head in that moment?
My mind is clear for the most part. But I'm always telling myself to believe. I repeat it over and over again. Believe in your training.

Who are you fighting next?
My next opponent is Jimmy Davidson. Jimmy is 5-0 and the current Cage Titans lightweight champion. On April 13th I plan on giving him his first taste of defeat; and becoming the new champ.

Any final words?
First off I'd like to thank my coaches. Without you guys I don't know where I'd be. I can't say enough about Jay and Glad . You two mean more to me than you will ever know. Can't forget everyone at Gabriel Gladiator Training Center You guys keep me strong Ossss. To all my friends and family thank you believing in me when some have not. I love you all... Kym Sturdivant

The Funky Monkey (MMA) Mixed Martial Arts News interviews Kym Sturdivant

How did you get in to the sport?
I got into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after graduating from college. As a collegiate football player I had put on a lot of weight and realized that I did not want to carry it around anymore. So I wanted to find a way to lose the weight without going to the gym and found a school in my area via Google.

What's your favorite position/submission to use in any fight?
My jiu-jitsu game is simple and effective. I like most arm attacks from side control and sneaky gi chokes.

Who is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration is my coach Gabriel “Gladiador” Santos. He has shown me that through hard work dreams are possible. He sets that example on a daily basis and my jiu-jitsu game would not be where it is without his experience and guidance.

Which team are you training with in preparation for your next bout?
I train at Gladiator Training Center in West Springfield, MA.

What is your favorite aspect of BJJ?
My favorite aspect of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is everything, the mental process, the competition, the respect, and the up hill battle to become better.

What does it mean (for you) to be a Jiu-Jitsu player?
To be a competitive BJJ player means to set the standard for my team. I carry the entire team on the mat with me along with the responsibility to show all the lower belts and younger students what it takes to make it to the top of the podium.

What separates you from every other BJJ player?
My team separates from every other fighter. The one thing that we pride ourselves on is being battle tested.

If you could have one dream fight with anyone, who would it be?
There are many matches that I would like to have over again but I would love to compete on some of the highest stages and have the opportunity to compete in Brazil.

What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?
The best thing about BJJ is that I do not think I will ever stop competing, chasing medals is a habit and there are always senior divisions.

Thus far what is your greatest accomplishment in the sport?
My biggest accomplishment so far has been winning double gold at the No-Gi Pan American championship and being the #1 ranked Ultra Heavyweight Master Blue belt in No-Gi.

How do you spend your time when you're not training for a match or tournament?
I am always training for the next tournament but I enjoy time with my family and then there is always homework (have to love working towards my PhD).

Were your family and friends supportive when you decided to enter the world of BJJ/Grappling?
My family is completely supportive of my BJJ goals. My wife is at most competitions along with my children. My children are also BJJ players and it has been fun watching their games develop.

Whats your gameplan for 2013?
In 2013 I plan on winning my first world title and showing that I belong among the top Master Purple belts.

If you could fight anyone outside of the BJJ/Grappling world who would it be?
It would be fun to tap a UFC fighter in or out of the gi, preferably in the gi.

What are some of your hobbies outside of the ring?
I enjoy spending time with my wife and children, I do not time for any other activities.

What’s the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
I love music so it is nothing to find me listening to Sade, Angie Stone, Manson, 311, or Kem. You name it, it is most likely on my iPhone and ready to go depending on the mood I am trying to set on the mat from calming down to getting fired up.

Do you dig any sports other than BJJ/Grappling?
I do not follow any traditional sports. I enjoy catching live games versus watching them on television.

It’s 10 minutes before you're walking onto the mat, what’s going through your head in that moment?
101 ways to get the top control, watching the matches on the mat looking for flaws in people games.

When are you competing again?
My next competition is NAGA East Coast and then I get to defend my titles at AMMO on May 11th.

Any final words?
I would like to thank my family for being supportive as my weekends are often full and requires lots of traveling. My coach Gabriel Santos and my teammates at Gladiator BJJ (Training Center), my sponsors HYPE Xtreme-Fighting, AMMO, Sinners & Saints Tattoo (KS), and Richard Photography. I am looking for a gi sponsor so if you want your company represented by someone that is hardworking and does all the right things please contact me at ksturdiv@gmail.com
Thank you Rob and The Funky Monkey for taking the time to interview me.
